Onell Glyos Customs- Phanost Corps   Leave a comment

Standard Phanost was my first character Glyos figure, and a NYCC09 exclusive.  The black and GID combo got me, and with the advent of the Build Station offerings of all black Buildmen for building with, as well as GID and Black Phase Arms, I decided to make Phanost some troops!  The body types are inspired by other customs I’ve seen, with some improvements of my own based on the parts I had available.  I also made a jetpack and heavy cannon for Phanost so that he can keep up!  Hopefully the black Buildmen will come back in stock so I can make some more troops.

Zollmen White Pearl Blank Zudon and Workstation   1 comment

Last month a quick sale went up for some white and black pearl Zudons from Zollmen, another low-production run Japanese vinyl Kaiju manufacturer.  I managed to get a white one from someone who had to sell theirs before they got it.  The white pearl vinyl is gorgeous in person, but unpainted the figure is a little dull.   I did not want to overwhelm the pearl vinyl, which was the hook of the release.  The eye is a separate vinyl sphere inset in the socket so it actually moves, so getting an iris and pupil on was priority number one, done with Tamiya Clear Green to preserve the pearlyness underneath.  I then wanted to highlight the mouth, with its big friendly stupid grin, so I threw a pink mix in there, and then misted some thinned grey-blue over the arms, legs, and head to hit some of the details in the awesome crinkly sculpt.  Also visible is my little itty bitty college apartment workspace… scary.

RealxHead Mutant Head ‘Real-Type’ Color Custom   Leave a comment

Mutant Head is the first of the Mutant line from RealxHead, and the second figure Mori released.  There have been countless colorways of Head since his debut, but I always wanted one that would really nail down the ‘look’ of the character, as if it were in a comic or such.  At the East Coast Chogokin Summit, Onell/Glyos mastermind Matt Doughty was looking some of the other customs I had brought, when he informed me that he was making another trip to Japan and China to visit some friends and his factory, and that I should paint a custom figure for Mori as a gift, as Matt and Mori are personal friends and have begun to collaborate on projects.  The idea of painting a figure for the creator of one of the vinyl designs I love was daunting, and I had to really hunker down and think of something appropriate, which is where the ‘Real-type’ Head came into play.  I knew he needed to be green and goblin-ey, as that’s always how I’ve see Mutant Head, and I knew that I liked the faded denim shorts look I used on my Zombie Chaosman.  I still had the friendly Hawaii-esque pink from my Zagoran custom, and decided to use that as the trim/spot color to keep Head from looking scary.  The last challenge was deciding what to do with the eyes, which are unique and a little weird.  I wanted to avoid them looking scary without painting in some kind of goofy looking eyes in there, so I opted for a gentle orange glow.  I really hope that Mori likes the figure when he gets it, and knows how much I enjoy his figures!

Clear Gargamel Zagoran Custom   Leave a comment

Gargamel is one of the leading Japanese vinyl manufacturers, with their most recognizable design arguably being the Zagoran.  Zagoran was a bootleg vintage design, from what I understand, brought back into popularity by Gargamel, in part due to how easily his simple and friendly design lent itself to custom paint jobs.  Some collectors spend their entire career hunting Zagorans, never to have them all, but all of them looking amazing.  This custom is done on a clear blank, which I believe was for a custom contest a few years back, similar to the BlobPus blob I recently did for a current contest.  I wanted to try painting the figure from the inside, since I really like the figure and wanted to be able to still handle it and play with it afterward without worrying about damaging the custom paint.  I kept the paint scheme simple, and found that painting figures from the inside is hugely difficult… I had some problems with the paint sticking, and then beading up, as well as running, as evident in a few places, but overall I’m happy with how the figure came out.  I picked ‘friendly’ colors, similar to a Hawaii scheme.  The lips and mouth and eye were painted from the outside.

BlobPus Painting Contest Blob   1 comment

BlobPus is a designer vinyl company that I do not know much about, but they have some really neat designs with lots of tentacles and a ‘softer’ sculpting style than most figures.  They are quite well established, to the point of hosting a painting contest.  Normally an event like this would end up in Japan only, but contest blanks were sold through the retailed lulubelltoys, so naturally I had to grab one and give it a whirl.

I based my blob’s paint scheme on the color scheme I use for my HORDES Legion of Everblight dragonspawn figures, a scheme I have not painted in a while and was itching to try with the airbrush and new paints.  I used multiple shades of purple for the undertones, and highlighted the highest points with everything up to pure white.  Anything tentacle sucker-ey was colored pink and given some red ink details.  The base blank figure was clear, so I wanted to try and use some of that in my paint job.  The eyes are sewn shut, but I painted the inside of the eyes with clear yellow and green, and allowed some of to show through like a glow of power leaking through.  I also decided the skull on the one tentacle would be a magic blast of some sort, rather than just a gross tentacle holding a skull.

The one part I had a tough time on was the mouth area… I wanted it to be bloody at first, but figured it would get lost among the red tentacle details, so I tried to give it a green glowing effect after the fact.  Really I should have done like the eyes and painted the colors from the inside and just gone light on the white and purple, but it is too late now.

Edit:  I just (9/25) received word that my figure was one of five chosen for the show!  I think that 5 is just chosen from the non-Japan people who contributed, and it is an honor and thrill to be chosen!

Had some unbelievably overgrown yams that were just begging to meet their role models.  Too bad I’m still waiting on the new Eyezon minis, as they would have fit in perfectly!Potatohorde

Real X Head Zombie Chaosman   1 comment

Mutant Chaos is a shapeshifter, who can sample different organisms with his probe arm and take their form.  I ended up with a Chaosman (Chaos head and Mutant body) blank after making a Bigaos (Chaos body, Bigaro head shroud), and event though the Bigaos was what I was after first, I ended up having an idea for what to do with the Chaosman blank first.  This is Chaos after taking a zombie form… the question being, is he still Chaos inside, or has the zombie plague corrupted even Chaos and turned him into a mindless shambler???

The figure was airbrushed with Cel-Vinyl colors, and then I went in and hand painted the wrist bracelets to be rusted over, as well as adding the ichor to the head and the blood drips and splats.

RxH Chaos Ray-Gun Prototype WIP   Leave a comment

This is a prototype for an accessory I’m working on.  I’ve got an awesome Armored Chaos Real x Head figure, and I thought he would look awesome with a ray gun to wield.  Mutant Chaos is supposed to be a shape shifter, who uses his distinctive arm probe to sample other organisms to mimic, but I like to think that the probe can also double as a ray weapon of sorts.  The Armored Chaos figure is a tribute to an old Japanese show hero, and looks like a form Mutant Chaos would take when things are getting heavy and the Mutants need some support.  I figured he could shapeshift the probe into a ray-gun so he could still use it, but in the heat of battle, he might lose focus, and the ray-gun probe extremity would be the first thing to waver in form.  The current piece is sculpted out of Aves Apoxie-Sculpt over a plastic tubing armature, with some styrene-strip details and some miscellaneous tank bits.  The details still are not a hundred percent, as I want to refine the tendril-like texture of the gun, as well as add maybe a trigger or a bit more detail to the rear ray-gun bit.  I’m thinking that if there’s interest, I could recast these to sell, with or without painting depending on what people want.

Glow In the Dark Vinyls!   Leave a comment

While I was taking the glow shots of Eyezon, I figured I’d take a glow collection shot as well!  Here’s everything I’ve got so far, with more glowing stuff on the way!  There’s the Eyezon, my DeadPresident’s Alien Xam ‘Baltan’, RxH Kozik Pickel Bigaro and Chaos, RxH GID Gachigon (and baby!), and the head on my Onell Phanost!

Kaiju Eyezon ‘Sprouting’ Glow In the Dark   2 comments

Eyezon is probably the most recognizable of the Max Toy Company creations.  The back story is that Eyezon is a giant mutated potato, now bent on destruction (obviously).  This was the unpainted Glow in the Dark (GID) release, painted by me to look like Eyezon right after mutating.  The colors are more ‘natural’ earthy potato colors for the body, along with yellows and greens for the arms and legs to look like potato sprouts, with the magenta tips to the growth characteristic of potatoes.  I had alot of fun painting this big guy up, and he still glows awesomely thanks to some subtlety and transparency to the colors!

Glow shots have arrived!
