Toys!   Leave a comment

Took some time to snap photos of a few new figures that have been holding my interest lately.

From SDCC 2010, painted by Fig Lab, this Armored Blobpus GID.  Gorgeous glow vinyl with a special set of resin battle armor for the fearsome blob.

SDCC2010 Yamazakura Devil Mermaid.  This is the first release of this figure, and I think it’s awesome.  Fight figure sized with a great pose, detail, and design!

Elegab Oil Shock.  Another unbelievable standard-sized kaiju from Nari… huge size, fantastic articulation, and a sculpt jam-packed with detail and character.

And lastly, the biggest score of my last YJA run… an original Bullmark Moguera, my favorite kaiju sculpt, vintage or modern.  Having this figure in hand is just surreal… you can see tool marks in the sculpt, and it is very clearly a handcrafted figure.  It also has foot writing, a dividing factor among vintage collectors.  It was common practice for kids to write their names on the foot of their vinyl figures back in the day, so they knew who’s figure was who’s after a big battle in the sandbox.  Some collectors prefer un-marked figures for their mintyness, but I would rather have a marked figure, because it gives the figure a little more history, and I know that the toy led a long and successful life as a child’s plaything before becoming an object of adult collectors’ lust.  What’s funny about my particular figure is that, instead of a child’s name, the foot is actually marked with ‘Moguera’, the character’s name… someone way back labeled the figure, maybe so the kid wouldn’t forget its name?  Who knows, but it’s a wild little facet of the toy’s history.

E.killer Fant Art by Josh Bernard!   Leave a comment

I was greeted on Facebook with this fantastic surprise, a piece of painted E.killer fan-art by none other than my friend and digi-boss Josh Bernard, owner of CollectionDX.  You can check out more of Josh’s art on Quibx Blog.  Josh has an awesome metal album-art style with heavy black inking and a dark sensibility, and it really brings the E.killer to life!  Click the image for the full-size… it’s unreal.

Prometheus Rising Studios Photos on Le Studio Plastique!   Leave a comment

The Le Studio Plastique exhibit The 100 Greatest Kaiju Battles went live this morning, and it is even cooler than I could have expected.  The curator, Olivier, did a fantastic job organizing the various photos by theme, and you should look through all of them.

Killer Culture Invades the East Coast Chogokin Summit!   Leave a comment

This weekend was the East Coast Chogokin Summit, the gathering of CollectionDX and ToyBoxDX members, both local and from afar.  Many homegrown efforts were shown alongside vintage and modern toy trades, including Incubot‘s Nekosaursus vinyl, Nekobot USBs, and the unofficial debut of the Voltron Lion Force USB figure; a peak at what Sanjeev’s Brown Noize Productions is working on; and of course, Killer Culture’s first wave of E.killer resin figures.  The first wave successfully sold out at the show,so check this spot for news on what’s coming next!

The first wave of Killer Culture E.killers is still available, so you should go check those out in the Store, but I wanted to share some photos of what new toys have been occupying my time lately: Henshin Cyborg!  The dizzying array of different figures and accessories available, both modern and vintage, makes for some great characters and fun combinations!

E.killer Review on Battlegrip   Leave a comment

Phil Reed have talked quite a bit about toys since I noticed his posting a link to my site a while back on his site, Battlegrip.com.  I sent Phil one of the first E.killers as a thank you for all of his help and advice from his experience with sculpting and casting resin toys, and he was nice enough to post a review.  Check it out here.  I’ll forgive Phil this one time for thinking it’s a plant monster, since it IS green. 😉  Check out Phil’s other awesome reviews and Spotted Online features; he’s really in touch with a good slice of the DIY toy community and keeps tabs on a number of artists and sites.  When you’re done checking out Battlegrip, come back here and pick up an E.killer for yourself!

Real X Head ‘Cray-vil’ Custom   1 comment

I painted this Mutant Evil at the end of school, before the epiphany that was Monster Kolor arrived.  I painted this guy with Cel Vinyl acrylics, and was trying some more loose sprays and color fades, and another ‘real-type’ look using a muted color palette.  The skin is glossy and the denim-colored shorts and wrist-bands are matte, and the two different finishes really add to the effect overall.
