PRHI 3D Printed ‘Box’ Mk I and Mk II 1/6 Scale Kit Printable Files   Leave a comment

detent-square1-01

I posted the PRHI ‘Box’ Mk I 3D printed toy a while back.  It was designed as an exercise for me to try out some new joint designs.  It’s a bootleg of ThreeA’s Square toy, with some additional detail and accessory bits by me.  I had never really planned on using this model for anything more, but I have received a couple requests to share the files.  Sort of an ‘open source’ Square bootleg.  I’m hosting a .zip folder of the STL files needed to print your own ‘Box’ for personal purposes.  The models are intended to be printed in ABS plastic, as I do not believe PLA has the elasticity for the ratchet joints in the legs to work properly.  In addition to the Box Mk I, I am posting files for the Box Mk II, which I do not believe I have ever shown off before:

Here are download links for the two sets of files.  Each is a .zip folder containing all the parts needed to print a PRHI Box.  Parts that need to be printed more than once are labeled as such in the filename.  These are provided as-is, with no support.  If you print one and do something cool with it, send me an email!

No wonder R5’s motivator was bad after such poor maintenance.

Since Disney took over the Star Wars property, it has been a licensing free-for-all, with a massive influx of products from every manufacturer imaginable.  The best toy and model products, of course, are coming from Japan.  Bandai has been making some excellent new SW toys and models, including these new 1/12 scale plastic kits of some of some of the franchise’s most famous droids.  The kits are masterworks of engineering, just like Bandai’s Gundam plamo lines.  They are designed to be built without paint, with most parts molded in color and decals for the rest.  In C-3PO’s case, the entire kit came with a vacuum-formed chrome finish.  I used the kit colors, but obviously couldn’t leave them so crisp and clean.  I applied the kit decals, painted the silver bits with a better metallic color (Monster Kolor!), and then hit everything with a coat of satin varnish.  3PO did not need any additional paint except for the wires, belly bit, and his palms.  From there, I went to town with the weathering, showing these three after some hard times trudging through the sands of Tatooine.  I’ll be posting full galleries of each this week, so check back!

PRHI Micro Moving Mecha (Prototype ver.) 3D Printed Action Figure   1 comment

PRHI-MicroG-Proto-01

The newest PRHI 3D printed toy was inspired by a sketch done by Minoru Sashida, Head Art Director at Namco Bandai and longtime Microman expert.  Sashida-sama had envisioned the RX-78-2 Gundam in the style of other robots released as diecast figures in the Microman line, such as Kotetsu Jeeg (鋼鉄ジーグ) and Magnerobo Gakeen (マグネロボ・ガ・キーン).  These diecast figures came about because the original toys for both series were made by Takara, so they were able to release these characters under the Microman banner as well.  Sashida-sama’s illustration is a ‘what-if’, rendering the Gundam in the same style as the other Micro robot diecasts.  I loved the drawing, and could immediately see how well it work would as a real toy.  I started with that sketch and ended up here, with a fully articulated Micro-sized Gundam.  I worked in the mecha’s classic accessories, as well as some design inputs from the original Clover toys that were released alongside the anime.  For the Micro Moving Mecha’s (MMM) debut, I had to go with the iconic black and white RX-78-1 Prototype paint scheme.  This fully painted one-off debuted at FOE Gallery’s LOOK5 show and will be available on their site here if it hasn’t sold yet: Shop FOE Store.  The first regular release of the PRHI MMM is in the works, and will be a printed in color version in blue and silver to look like a diecast metal figure.  Stay tuned for details!

These two TARS were commissioned by private collectors after missing out on the first fully painted release.  Both requested a cleaner TARS without the weathering, so they are bright and shiny, with just natural shading instead of a lot of washes and effects.  3D printed in ABS plastic and painted with Monster Kolor.

3D Printed Pulsar LED Watch for GI Joe 1/6 Scale   Leave a comment

I was working on a James Bond-themed 12″ GI Joe kitbash based on the first teaser of Daniel Craig from SPECTRE, wearing a simple garb reminiscent of the duds Roger Moore wore in Live and Let Die.  The parts list was pretty easy overall, but there was one critical piece missing, Bond’s watch!  Moore’s Bond actually wears a gadget-laden Rolex Submariner for most of the movie, but in his first scene of the film he has on something far cooler, a Pulsar P2 2900 LED watch!  I have a bit of a fascination with LED watches, so I knew I needed to make one to complete my Joe Bond bash.

The trick with this model was keeping it small and in-scale looking while representing the metal link band and the shape of the face.  This project really pushed the limit of fine detail capabilities from a home-grade FDM 3D printer, but with a little paint the results look the part.
